You only need a passport if you are flying into Canada. Boat & car travel restrictions have not come into effect yet. My sister is a airline clerk at our local airport & trust me you absoluetly have to have one to fly or you will be turned away at the ticket counter.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Inititative is an American based law. You will not need a passport to come to Canada; but depending on how you are travelling, you may need one to return home. (in your case called "Re-entry to the USA" since you are coming from that direction)
If you are flying home; effective January 23, 2007, you will need a passport. If you are driving or going by water you will need government issued photo ID (drivers license) and an original birth certificate (to prove your citizenship)
Starting next year, as soon as January 2008, you will need a passport to re-enter the USA by land and water.

You don't need a passport to cross the border yet unless you are flying in! But make sure that you take your Birth certificate, your SSI card, and also a photo I.D, like your driver's licence!!! Good luck and have fun!

Anyone flying from US to Canada or vice versa will need a passport.
Any American (or Canadian) citizen driving or coming by bus/train will NOT require a passport, at least until January 2008. (Not sure about boats)
These new regulations were put into place by Homeland Security in USA. Canada is following suit to assist with the US requirements being put in place.

if you are flying you do need one as of January 2007. if you are travelling by land or sea you dont until january 2008. but bring picture ID and birth certificate to reduce frustration at the boarder as they will ask to see it.
