and buried without being laid in a casket. Why is that? Don't Muslims believe in being laid to rest in a coffin?

No we dont, you have to be wrapped in the white cloth in a certain way and then just be buried like that. Also there is a cleansing ritual that has to followed. The body has to be washed a certain way and the cloth has to be draped also in a specific way. You dont have to be in a coffin. Some muslims are very set against it cos they believe that its immitating the christians but some do get buried in a coffin while still being wrapped in the cloths.

Muslim tradition prescribes that Muslims be buried without a coffin, facing towards Mecca and in soil wrapped in a white shroud.

being laid to rest in a coffin is just considered formality, I say for the sake of formality.Do what the Muslims do while you are in their country or in their governance.

I have no answer to your actual question, but you bring up another excellent question that has always bothered me. I do not understand why anyone is buried in a coffin. I mean really, what's the point? You're DEAD. Might as well use your body as fertilizer. That's my thoughts on the subject.

No, muslims simply wrap the body in a white cloth and bury it.

I dont think it is necessary to have a coffin in the Muslim world. In my country we do not have coffins.
