The best place to buy film in bulk is at B&H photo but that is only if you are living in the United States. However, I am suspecting you might be from the UK by your spelling and choice of language so B&H may not be the best choice. So if you are going to Japan, I would suggest you consider purchasing your film in Japan. As a pro photographer currently residing in Japan, we have lots of places to buy film such as Kitamura camera and Bic camera. Oddly enough I can sometimes get film cheaper here than I could get in the US, in particular Fuji film. Ilford and Kodak tend to be a little more expensive than in the US, but not too far off.

The very cheapest way for me was to buy 35mm movie film and pack it in the cartridges myself. If you develop it yourself the asa doesn't madder as you can correct for this in developing. Some of the older photography stores used to develop it for you and get it right if you told them what asa setting you were using on the camera. You can't change asa setting in the middle of a roll of film.
