I'm in the same boat, and it took me a long time to see a dr, i started having them around 10 or 11 and just barely seen a dr when i was 29(last year) he prescribed "prozac" at first and i ended up in the emergency room at four am cuz i believed i was dying. so when that didn't work he gave me "lexapro" and i've been more normal than i ever have.............

Social anxiety can cause these feelings, which can also lead to severe depression,
http://www.socialanxietyinstitute.org/ds...

if not you could be suffering from Generalized Anxiety
Disorder..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/general_anx...

There is hope; I've been there, and still am there, it is a long, hard struggle. I recommend
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cognitive_b... worked best for me, with mild anti-anxiety meds. I suffered from social anxiety for over 15 years. I've tried individual therapy, and group therapy and studied psychology for 10 years, as a profession, but also with the hope to cure myself.

Depending on your comfort level, you could go to a psychologist that practices CBT and specializes in anxiety disorders, seek a group therapy, or create one. Usually those that do attend the group therapy are a bit more high functioning because as you know, it can be difficult to speak in a group.

Another idea is to see if there are any local research studies being conducted that you could participate in.

The program that finally worked the best for me is this one: http://www.socialanxiety.us/findinghelp.... and I was lucky enough to have a structured behavioral group to go along with it. Sometimes the people that actually attend this program come back home and form groups.

Any questions, let me know ... I can't tell you how much this has improved my life!

Being able to say "things are NOT alright!" is a very good start!

Everyone feels fear, but when it gets out of control it can ruin your life!

There are lots of things a professional could do to help. Whether it was medication, counselling, relaxation techniques.. there are lots of things that can help. Luckily for you, anxiety is one thing that doctors and therapists have a lot of success treating.

Best of luck! See your doctor first and take it from there!

Hope you can move on in life with a free and happy heart!

Anna Dee, regarding your state, I can only recommend that you get professional help. If you don't have the means for this, you can seek help at your local church (that is, if you're a Christian.) From your description, it seems like you are under deep anxiety. Ultimately, any help will fall to pieces if you don't help yourself. You must learn to be brave and face these unnecessary fears. You have to start gathering social experience so that you may acquire self-confidence. Once you come out, you will realize that the world is not that bad after all, and that there are numerous good people living on this earth, too.

I recently learned information from my family history that changed my outlook considerably. My recommendation is to ask some of your immediate relatives and their siblings whether your parents or grandparents have experienced (or currently experience) similar issues.
You should also consider visiting a trained professional counselor to assist in uncovering the possible causes.

Have you considered seeing a doctor about medication coupled with seeing a therapist about dealing with anxiety issues and learning relaxation techniques? Just a suggestion. Good luck!
