Report this doctor to your local medical board. What a stupid answer he/she gave you. I'm actually worried about you here because this swelling could be a lot of things--blood clots for example.
Go to another doctor as soon as you can.
When you pick the best answer, please write in the comment section what has happened to you. You may help someone else.

Just like all the others said find another doctor and get a second opinion immediately. It could be a symptom of serious conditions. 49 is still way to young for this to happening because of age. When I was in my early 30's I had phlebitis(blood clot) in one of my legs. It had swelled up besides other symptoms and was very serious and requited a hospital stay and medications. Just to be safe have it checked again.

Pardon the judgment call, but that seems like a crap-*** answer! 49!!! Leg swelling!!! Age!!!! What century is this? 49 is very young. Vital, even. The others are right, get a second opinion. Someone who went to medical school post WWII.

Get a second opinion. Just because you're 49 doesn't mean it makes your leg swell. There has to be an underlying symptom

That's odd, I never knew age could cause someone to suffer from leg oedema. I would get a second opinion. Leg oedema is indication for quite a number of diseases, some of which includes first degree of heart failure, kidney diseases, metabolite disorder, etc.
I think you really should consult another doctor.

I would find another doctor to ask as 49 is too young for it to be age causing swelling! I quit my long time doctor when he looked at my hives and told me it looks like acne! He prescribed the sulfa drug to clear up fluid in my ears after a flu and it gave me hives which he called acne. If you feel your doctor is wrong please go to another! I've been told you never get rid of these hives! Thanks Doc!!!

Obtain a second opinion.
Determine what changes in lifestyle, diet and environment might be factors in the situation.
