Can anyone tell me if gingivitis painful? I have had a lot of dental work done in the last 2 months and my dentist says my teeth are very sensitive. I go for a cleaning this morning, haven't had one in over 6 years. Anyway, my gums around my molars are puffy and feel inflamed, one is really bothering me. I don't know if this gingivitis or possibly a cavity my dentist could have missed or sensitivity? Any ideas?

Likely gingivitis, my teeth get like that too sometimes. I haven't had a cleaning in 3 yrs :o! I am going in a month. I think it's from the plaque building up on the tooth and leaving a pocket under the gum for food to get stuck in (small amounts) and it irritates the gums (that's what my husband's dentist told him last time he was there).

My mom lost all her teeth to periodontal disease which comes after years of letting gingivitis get worse (when the disease progresses to the jaw bone, not just the gums).

A huge amount of people have gingivitis in some form and don't realize it. If your gums bleed at all while brushing you probably have it. The term just means "inflamed gums". It is pretty easily reversed if you floss twice a day and brush at least twice a day and get regular cleanings every six months to a year.

Good luck at the dentist! :)
