Why is it that some people answer 3 years that they can be removed? Where does it say that? If you look here it clearly says 4 years http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/EndorsementsAndDisqualifications/DG_4022550 Where do people get 3 years from? Provide a link please.

3 years they become invalid. 4 years they are able to be removed, physically, from your licence.

So after 3 years you suddenly got 9 points on your licence then you'd still be ok.

They say "If you incur 12 or more penalty points within a period of THREE years you will be liable to be disqualified under the 'totting-up' system. Information on your driving entitlement and endorsements are sent to the courts and police on request."
