Good for you Helz!! You have chosen the BEST form of all round exercise. It is low impact - doesn't put uneccessary weight on joints, and exercises the entire body, including your heart most importantly.
YES! The exercise plus healthy eating thing is the way to do it. You must increase your metabolism with exercise as well as do the eating thing.

Swimming is excellent exercise. I have a swimming pool in the garden and try to swim more or less everyday between March and October even though it's pretty cold this time of year. The effect on my weight is very noticable. I eat healthily but I'm usually around 2 kilos heavier during the non swimming period.

At the moment I only stay in around 15 to 20 minutes because of the affects of the cold but as it warms up I'll do half an hour or more.

Good luck.

Not sure about the calories - probably depends on what stroke you do and how quick you go. It is really great exercise though as it covers most of your muscles. When I was swimming regularly I was really fit & had a really flat tummy. Try to mix your strokes up a bit and do exercises just for your arms or legs e.g. having a float between your legs to make your arms work hard or just kicking to give your legs a good work out. It also breaks up the monotony to do different things.

Its the best exercise you can do because it puts absolutely no strain on any part of your body

it works all muscle groups and encourages good posture

Its also very relaxing and lowers stress levels

As for the calories I'm sorry but I don't know- I do suggest swimming for more and more lengths as you get fitter

Dont know about calories.....but swimming is the best sport for you. Low impact, no strain on joints. All round fitness and strengths all over body.
Try 20 lengths for first few weeks, then you will be able to do more in the same amount of time.
Great!
Keep it up!
