if we just "do" something, without really thinking about it, our body gets on with it & it seems "natural" / easy
if we are being watched, we tend to think about "getting it right" rather than just "doing it" & this causes anxiety
also, if others are watching, we can think about whether they will be jeer or cheer & whether we want to be part of their group or not - this all adds to too much thinking & worrying, which interferes with just doing it.
the only way to get rid of this "performance anxiety" is to practice with people around; do it 10x (whether people laugh/ cheer/ whatever), then 10x more.
after a while, you will forget they are there and forget to be worried & just do it
this takes a bit of courage, but if you do it once, you build up confidence & you will find you can do it again & again
if you don't feel confident - think of something that you are really good at & how easy that it to do; now apply that to this situation & think how easy it will be to just do it

Just be sure to wear a helmet.
If you don't and sustain a brain injury during a wipe out, you'll wind up working for the Union Pacific, stuck in Omaha, in an office with no windows.

armin,
Simple...performance anxiety. You SO do not want to screw up in front of people that you "choke" your performance.
I'm sorta the same way...when I'm shooting pool myself, I'm phenomenal...put me in front of folks though and I choke shots at every turn...and don't even get me started on the 8 ball...
