I don't know about chows I wouldn't get one I would much rather have a Golden chows scare me. My mom told me horror stories about working in the ER and having kids come in with being bitten just walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night

We have a chow-lab cross. He is a beautiful dog. He is very protective of his family. Everyone loves him. He is not vicusious . He protects his territory like any dog. He lives here with 4 cats and we've never had a problem there. But he is tempermental, he doesn't like hyper puppies, male or female. And he's bad around grown males. But he is 8 years old, and never been neutered. He'd probably be a little calmer if he was. Same as all dogs I think . Mostly at home he is the biggest suck. We love him, and so do alot of other people. He is more chow than lab, looks more like a chow. He is apricot, with a black muzzle and spotted tongue. He does need alot of attention, he will whine if he does't get it. We find he makes a great pet.

It really all depends on you--your needs, wants, and living arangements. Golden retrievers are big dogs and need lots of exercise--if you don't have a yard or aren't committed to taking them for frequent walks, they probably aren't for you. Chow chows are smaller and require less exercise, but are also willful, independent, wary of strangers, and harder to train, resembling cats more than dogs. In my experience, goldens are sweet, kind, very personable animals who live to please. Your aunt's dog may have just been getting its puppy energy out, or it could be that it just has a naturally crazy temperment. If you talk to a breeder, the two of you will be able to work together to find a puppy with a temperment that is right for you. I would say that if you are getting a dog mainly as a companion, you would be better off with a golden retriever.

The difference between the two breeds is like comparing apples and oranges.
I can tell you that the Golden has a great reputation, while the Chow often has the reputation of having aggression issues.
As far as the Golden being very hyperactive - the dog is probably young and therefore very active.
I'd recommend you research both breeds, check out breed clubs, etc.

In my opinion, golden retrievers are absolutley beautiful and adorable dogs!
i've never had a chow chow but i've heard that they are really really actice
it really depends on the personality of the dog
i would suggest that you go to a breeder if you want a puppy
that way, you can see what the parents are like. usually dogs have similar temperments to thier parents
i would stay away from pet shops as there is a higher chance of the puppies being sick
my first dog was from a pet shop and they siad it had been wormed, but it hadnt. it died of round worm about 2 weeks later. very sad :-(
my next dog was from a breeder and she is happy and healthy!
a dog is a big responsibility, but it is very rewarding.
do your research before you buy a dog
find out more about any breeds that you are interested in. the net has TONNES of info
also, talk to someone who has a dog. it helps! and talk to the breeders (if you go to any)
i wish you good luck with choosing your dog!

There's good and bad with every breed. Chow chow's were bred to be guard type dogs so alot of them i have encountered have some sort of aggression issues...Beware!!! They also require constant grooming which some people don't have time for. Golden's are nice dogs but can have alot of energy since they are bred to be hunting companions. Do research on what each breed was bred for and find a breed that will also fit into your lifestyle. Most people select dogs based on appearance...not a good idea!!

Among the dog world Chows have a BAAAAAD temperament reputation, I would think twice for a chow as a first dog. If a Golden's energy worries you (and this is just not a untrained outta control dog) I'd think a more placid breed - beagle, basset, maybe Eskimo.

If you're not a big person, you should seriously consider a smaller dog. Chow chows and golden retrievers would be more difficult to manage than smaller dogs (like a terrier-type dog, or a beagle), especially if you're not used to dogs.

Research on what is best suited to your personality. Chow chows are a bit more stubborn and retrievers are easier to train.

i does not have confidence the chow. Chow's are super with human beings, no longer lots with canines. i've got heard of a chow that killed a maltese and yet another chow blend attacked my chihuahua. very own opinion, i do no longer have confidence them
