Human Immunodeficiency Virus - or HIV - is the virus that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. There is not a virus that causes HIV. It is transmitted in three major ways - unprotected sex, contaminated needles, and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth, or through breast milk.

I think you're mixed up here.

AIDS is caused by HIV. You can have HIV but never develop AIDS in your life (or you could, which is more likely to happen).

HIV is the name of the virus itself. It stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
