If you make it an all or nothing thing, you are setting yourself up for a life of torment. We humans have a part of the brain I call the toddler brain. If someone tells the toddler she can't have something, she will only want it more...become obsessed.
I quit drinking (mostly) naturally. When I was in my late teens, early twenties, I drank alot...just about every night. As I got older, I found my body couldn't handle it, and I naturally quit most alcohol so I wouldn't be sick. Maybe it was easy because I stopped going out with friends who drank. Alcohol makes you feel comfortable in groups of people.
But I would never in a million years tell my toddler brain she can't have alcohol or anything else...that will make a problem where there is none. Moderation really is the key. Have a little, then have something else that you enjoy, all the while telling your toddler brain she can have whatever she wants whenever she wants....Let it be a choice every instant...you choose to drink something else for a while.
I gave up other bad habits that way. They just fade away if they're not good for you...if your body doesn't feel good after 'consuming' whatever. Aerobic exercise in the sun and good, raw, organic food helps tremendously. As you start feeling real good you don't want to do anything to change that. Calling a person 'alcoholic' or 'problem drinker' is highly unproductive...sets up a bad bout with the toddler.
I wish you all the luck in the world. Don't let others decide what is right for you (and your toddler brain).

No, it's all in your head.Just do one thing- STOP! You have to tell yourself that you don't need it and although you want it, it will kill you!!! Don't fall into the scams of AA 12 step program. You drink by choice. They want you to believe that it is a disease , and that you won't be able to stop unless you pay for some expensive rehab. But if you already know what alcohol does to you, then you and only you has the power to stop. I
It is normal to feel different after stopping a daily routine, as you would feel if you drove everyday for the past four years and now were forced to walk or ride the bus. Your emotions would feel different and you might even feel frustrated, but it's all temporally. Eventually you will get use to not drinking and you won't feel different anymore.

You feel like your going insane because all those feelings are waking up.See, when you drink, alcohol numbs those feeling. Thats why alot of people are alcoholics. They drink because they cant deal with how they are feeling. When you stop drinking, all these feelings start to wake up. And they seem to all wake up at the same time, and it makes you feel like your going crazy. That is why alot of alcoholics go back out and start back to drinking. You have alot of reasons why you should not drink. Look AA up in your phone book. Talk to the person that answers.Tell them whats going on with you. Tell them you have hit your bottom and your ready to quit but you cant do it by yourself. That will be your first step. I sure hope you hang in there. Tell people how your feeling, you dont have to go thru this alone. You will be in my prayers.

Since you said you are a heavy drinker, your system has been addicted to alcohol and its effects, Norw that you can't drink coz of your sickness you are having withdrawal symptoms. Well if you can overcome this stage, then congratulations! you have saved your self a lot of health and money too. Find something to divert your thoughts from it. Take a book, write something, eat some candies, anything different. Good luck man!

The above answer is good, But despite what some purists at AA think.. I think that after intense drinking, seeing if your doc wants you to go on meds for a few months or something is smart too.
