the bearings on my rear wheel have perished and i need to reinstall new ones. i've taken out the axle rod (nut & bolt type) and the bearings on the opposite end to the sprocket come out easy. But now i'm stuck in getting the sprocket side bearings out as it looks as if the sprocket holds the bearings in so do i need to remove sprocket and if so how do i do that?

Yes you will need to remove the cassette, freewheel or sprocket depending on which you have. You will need a few tools to do it. cassette or lock ring key and chain whip/s. you will need the right one for your hub.

Try this link to see which you have

If you have a bit of a scratch around on sheldon brown's site you will find all the info that you need. You will still need the tools.

Your local bike shop will change them for a few bucks and can sell you the tools you will need to do the job.
