What sort of subcultures would you be ok for your kids to be part of?

And would you pretend to hate it to encourage them or be all relaxed.

ie think things like piecings, coloured , deadlocked hair and other 'tribla' elements plus music and common culture elements.

Ie I would be very happy for them to be part of rock music type scenes ie skatepunk, goth, emo, nu-metal, maybe with a little hip hop (but not the nasty stuff) through in.

Also if into psi trace and hippy rave (little worried about extra risk with things like possible ecstasy use and psycedelics but kid would have been very educated in drugs to minimise this)

Or hippy types

Being gay/lesbian whilst a bit gutted no lads chatting about girls talks or grand kids but cool.

Or if they were into wicca and pagan stuff.

More worried and hip hop... ok if just the break dance side of it and avoided gangsta street culture clubs like the plague.

Certainly interest in extreem sports cultures like snowboarding/surfing would be great.

However

Proper hip hop and any interest in gangsta, street, 'respect' culture would deffinetley be hated, along with garage music scenes, arrogant scenes with snooty dress codes, (not ones that ask you to come in fancy dress or something wild thinking more prada and rich stuff) .

Football or any territorial thug type culture or one that looks up to hardness.

Ie the first lot are characterised as generally peaceful ans supportive. Whilst may appear scarey are anything but in persoanlity and culture and caring, and fun teaching values of looking out for tohers. And real respect ie the older look after the younger... That does not mean chaparone and stuff dating . It means where needed.

They also tend to be creative.
And politically aware on protests

The second lot tend to be aggressive, and teach maliciousness, anti education, pro picking order and preditory dominanc

All the subculture types are just phases that children go through to try to gain the attention that is lacking in so many homes today. I went through a gothic phase myself, but since becoming a mother I lost my piercings and black garb. I would say that if one (or more) of my children wanted to get a piercing then it would depend on their reason for wanting it before they would gain my support. If they are only wanting to be like someone else, then no. I cannot see my children going through any such phase, however, because they won't have any need to cry out for help. They are extremely loved and praised at home and elsewhere.

I don't really mind what any of my children do in their adult lives so long as they stay within the law and are happy, my 15 year old daughter has just had her nose pierced and yes i did sign the form just like i did when she wanted her bellybutton done on her 13th birthday, it was what she wanted as part of her birthday presents, my youngest son has feminine tendencies and could well be gay but so long as he is happy and of course safe then i'm happy.

Well... I'm glad that you're so open minded about a lot of things that other parents aren't.

I think that as long as you can get them to care about grades, school, and their future, and see if you can help them think about consiquences, then let them be whatever they want to be.

WOW DUDE. Breakdance is NOT A GANGSTA SCENE. It's not vulgar, or anything related. Its an art. The bboying scene is a great scene to be a part of.

i can't control what my son does when he is older. i hope he would stay away from cliques and stereotypes and become his own individual. to become a leader not a follower.

right now he is a spongebob/jimmy neutron fanatic.

How you dress and your music doesn't affect who you are or the way you live your life.
