Of course it is not a sin. Actually God probably smokes to take his mind off the problems on earth. And, of course, smoking is the single biggest lied about thing there is so far in the 21st century. Although God probably smokes $50.00 Cuban cigars or one of those pipes that curl up.

After the longest and most in depth study ever as to "second hand" smoke, (a study that lasted over 40 years), the British Medical Journal's results showed that second hand smoke had no effect whatsoever. The president of the American Heart Assoc. sent a letter to the Journal complaining, not about the results, but just why they had released the results.

Smoking and more so, second hand smoke are proof that if you lie loud enough and long enough you can make a "new" truth.

But my favorite part of the smoking issue is the "pat" answers that everyone buys into. There are many, many cases of people that smoked all their life and lived well into their 80's and 90's. So ask any militant, non-smoker about that and you will hear, "they are just lucky." And, of course these people claim to be highly intelligent. And if smoking is that bad for you, then how can that be?

OK, so by now you must know by now that I am a smoker. So I am 59 years old, have been a heavy smoker for over 40 years and I am in excellent health. So just why is that? Luck? Or is smoking issue exactly what it is? BS.

Smoking is a cultural sin-meaning that we, as Americans, have somehow decided that it's a few notches higher on the sin chain. I don't know why. Here's perspective. I had a teacher who would do a lot of work in Turkey. He would go to church there and note that everyone smoked! People would run outside after church to smoke. It was a big thing! He would love it when people were outside smoking and see a tour bus approach with Americans inside. The people of Turkey would watch the Americans get off the bus, all fat and big and comment how gross that was. They would comment how much of a sin overeating is and how that's not taking care of your temple. So, my point is that anyone who doesn't overeat and eats healthy, has a right to comment on smoking- the rest of us (including me) do not.

If the cancer stopped after eating up half your lung you could have a point. And who says coffee destroys your heart?
Smoking is not a sin but it is a very stupid thing to do.

Do not smoke as it is bad for your lungs and health in general. Coffee is medicine if taken within limits. Same is not the case with smoking, with each puff, you are shortening your life by few moments.

for muslims, it was a contraversial issue that was debated for hundreds of years...

but in the end, the ulama' has decided that anything that is intoxicating is considered sin and therefore shall not be taken
(e.g : weed , alcohol etc)

for cigarrettes, they only mentioned that you shall not destroy your body over indulgence therefore it is considered 'makruh' (something that is not considered a sin and yet, if possible, try not to do/take it)

hope this helps...

salam!

I don't know if it is really a sin, but it is a bad habit which is also dangerous.
