As the others have said, use the West Coast Main Line.

Travel from London Euston to Oxenholme (Lake District) where you'll then need to catch another train to Windermere. It's only a short journey. Windermere is the only station actually in the Lake District. From there you can catch a bus to many of the other towns in the Lake District.

You can easily walk from Oxenholme into Kendal, it's only a couple of miles and it's downhill; from Kendal you could catch a bus into the Lake District

Book train tickets in advance and you can make substantial savings. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

If you've not been to the Lakes before then be aware that it gets extremely busy during peak times such as weekends, public and school holidays - be prepared for queues and lots of people.

Lake District to London uses the westcoast mainline. The trains running on this line are Virgin Trains. Note that following the recent derailment there are still delays.

This is a long journey and quite expensive, it is best to book a long time in advance (at least 7 days but months before is best). Try www.thetrainline.com or the Virgin Trains website may have deals. If you are eligible for a railcard (under 26 or a student/disabled/travelling with kids) this will get you 33% off although you will need to pay about £20 for the card. If a group is travelling try group bookings as sometimes you can get 4 for 3 or even 3 for 2.

Also consider what you'll do when you arrive! Some of the stations are very remote and it won't be easy to get to your final destination.
