First, you have to put yourself in the Presence of God. Ask God to forgive you for all your sins. If your life is in a mess, try to change it for the better. Ask God to help you change your life and help you make it better. Ask Him what you need to make it better. Wait for an answer. It might take a little time. It could take days, weeks, months, or even years. But God answers all prayers in His time. Sometimes his answer is yes, no or wait. Try to do little good things everyday. Help the needy. Help the poor, the broken hearted, the others who need you. Help everyone. When God sees you are serious about living a good life He will begin to help you. Go to Mary for help she also intercedes to God for us. Ask the help of the angels and the saints they also pray for us. Ask people to help you pray. God hears better when two or more people pray together.

Prayer is a means by which we draw nearer to God.
God hears all the prayers of the righteous. But consider the following:
A Christian hunter is hunting bears in the woods. While walking up a hill he grabs a branch for leverage and it breaks sending the hunter tumbling down the hill, gun flying off elsewhere. When the hunter dusts himself off he sees a huge bear charging him. The hunter begins running, but trips and falls, landing on his knees. Seizing the opportunity, and being a good Christian, the hunter begins to pray, "Lord, make this bear a Christian."
The woods are quiet, the hunter turns and, Hallelujah! He sees the bear on his knees, paws together, praying! Listening, he hears the bear praying, "Father, bless this food to my body."
The key point here is that God answers prayers of the righteous, but the answer you get may not be the answer you want, BUT it will always be the right answer.
I speak to God just as I write these words to you now. I have a conversation with Him each day. My prayers are conversations that follow a pattern. I start every prayer with the following: "Most merciful God, not my will, but yours be done." I repeat that phrase often during my prayers. Sometimes I will do so for tens of times just to quiet my mind and make it open to hearing from my Creator.
Use the following pattern in all your prayers and you will see them answered: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. See the links below for more information. (acronym: ACTS)

I don't subscribe to any particular religion but I do believe in a God and I do pray.
I usually do it at night while I'm laying in bed trying to get to sleep. I find it's a good time to reflect on the events of the day/week/life. I start off by thanking God for the good in my life. My family, my health, any recent successes. I think it's important to acknowledge the positive and the things that are going well, not just to focus on the negative. Then I just silently talk to him. Explain what's going on and ask for guidance. Ask for the courage and strength to deal with what's going on. Not necessarily for Him to do something miraculous for you but to give you the necessary skills to deal with the life events occurring. Maybe it's psychological, just putting yourself in a more positive mentality and having confidence that you can resolve your issues. Maybe He really is giving a helping hand. Either way, I find that after praying, which I don't do every night or every week even, usually helps me find some answers.
Maybe it will give you the courage to reach out to those who can help you, friends, family, or professionals. I don't know if there is a Biblical protocal for praying, but this works for me. I hope it helps you too!

A while back i also wanted to ask this question..i see only dumb idiots are giving stupid answers..wish they would all just grow up...
The great thing abt God is that you dont even have to move your lips..you cansimply just pray in your heart..there is not one prayer that goes unheard...and dont ever think that God is not listening...He is even working your miracle as you typed this question because He can see your heart's desires and needs..I hae recently started a prayer book..where i keep a journal everyday...just writing my thoughts down and "speaking" to God through by writting it..this also helps..whatever you do..Please dont stop praying...Alot of people dont realise the power in the "Our Father" prayer...dont worry..i will also say a prayer for you..i just know God will come through for you!

Pray with love, honesty, faith and sincerity.
The Lord already knows what you need and what is going on in your life at the moment. All he wants you to do is come to him, accept him into your heart and life whilst believing that he can and will help you.
Give thanks and praise to the Lord first.
You may feel right now that you dont have anything to ne thankful for but be thankful for the fact that the Lord sent his only Son to die on the cross for our sins. This alone shows how much he loves us and for that we should be eternally thankful and loving towards him.
Always put the Lord first in everything you do as without him we have nothing as he has power over everything.
There will be times when you think that he cant hear you but never, ever lose faith. He does hear you and he knows what you want and need before you say it. You must just continue to be patient, he wants us to be patient and to perservere in faith.
When you pray to the Lord pray in Jesus' name.
Although thinks seem yucky right now you have to believe that it wont be like this forever. In life we go through horrible things in order to prepare for us for the wonderful things that has God has in store for us.
Psalm 13 has come to me so, if you want to, then please read this Psalm from the Bible. You dont have to read it everyday or anything but just have a look over it as it may give you comfort at this time.
I have prayed for you too.
God Bless you.

You are right....if your life is a mess you definately need God!
Pray by asking God to help you in your situation and commiting your life to Him
ps. God loves to answer prayer so keep on praying even if the answer isn't perfect or a yes straight away. God will help you and ever be near.

Talk to whoever you're praying to. Prayer doesn't have to be formal. It can be anything from a small "Thank you," or recognizing the beauty in something your god created. My advice is to do what you feel works. The best thing to remember is, no matter how you say it, God'll hear it.

Seek advice from 'real' people to help you out. It is good to have a faith if that is what you truly believe, but often talking to 'real' people and gaining advice can make you feel a whole lot better.
Go to your doctors and ask for some counselling, or search though the yellow pages for some voluntary organisations of people who will listen.
