you should be crate training,,, easier on the dog and easier on you.... no stress all positive +++++++never think of it as a cage,, liken it to using a playpen and a crib for an infant,, it is for security, safety and it will be you pups own special space.

"If we leave it too long, he wees on the kitchen floor." You have an answer right there; don't ignore it for too long. Since he's having the occasional accident, you should try letting him out to go to the bathroom at least every 2 hours or so.
Since he keeps pooping in the middle of the night, that's a sign that his bowels are ready for a movement....in the middle of the night. Try a couple more "let outs" in the middle of the night. If that doesn't work (say, he doesn't poop outside, but still craps on the floor in the night), talk to your vet.
Good luck!

It occurs to me that if he's pooing in the night then perhaps altering his feeding time may work. Dogs usually defaecate within a couple of hours of being fed.
Secondly, after he's pooed, do you clean the area with disinfectant? If so that also may not help. We've found over the years, a spot that's cleaned with disinfectant will attract the dog to poo there again. Clean with warm water and washing up liquid. Hope you sort it soon.....Allan

you don't need to put your puppy in a cage, just buy some puppy training pad from the pet smart,or any pet shop (pet smarts are the best) put one near the door and buy some odour spray and when he wees on the floor use this to mop it up stops them leaving there sent....keep taking him to the mats when he has done a poo or wee on the floor, but tell him he is bad but don't shout to loud to make him scared...you can also put a dog flap in the door...my puppy goes to the door to but still has his accidents... but uses the mat at night if he gets up......and if I'm not there...if you get a dog flap get a silent one as some times the noise scares them and they wont go through it.. when you take him out side tell him "poo poo" or "wee wee" and he will wee and poo on command when he has worked out what you are telling him...hope this has helped..this will take time..

Dogs need to go about 20 minutes and then again about 16 hours after they're fed. So change the time you feed him.
Since he's going regularly at the same time every morning, delay his dinner for a couple of hours so he can hang on til you're up.

I use to have a puppy and usually in Korea they have this pad made of Wet Tissue. It worked on my puppy, Choco. Still, At first you have to take him/her to the pad several times. Maybe a few days. Then when your puppy wants to wee or poo your pup will find where he/she wee or poo.
This is how to make the pad:
1: First you get a large pad or plastic.
2: Then you put 5 -7 layers of tissue. First layer must be wet.
3:You put it where the puppy usually wee or poo.
Don't forget if the puppy poo somewhere punish him. You have to. Or else he will have the habit. AND BY THE WAY!!! you have to make him poo/wee once a day. If he escapes put him on the pad back again. Then he might stop. If he doesn't poo on the hall floor or wee anywhere give him a treat. Then he will get use to it...
P.S. Put him in a cage at night and make sure you have 5 layers of tissue under his cage. Just in case he/she poo in there and DON'T FORGET THE PAD!!!

at six months your dog should have bowel control...get him on scheduled feeding morning and evening......a crate would help...first thing in the morning put his leash on lead him to pee area..stand there at that spot for 15 minutes... feed him breakfast..let him eat as much as he wants when he moves away from bowl with food pick up put away for next feeding time....after 10 minutes of morning quaility time..again outside for pee or poo...no poo then back to the crate for another 10 to 15 minutes then back to poo area....you must take time to train the animal....you allowed too much freedom without discipline and order for a young dog....get a book on housebreaking with a crate...in 10 days you would have your dog trained......6 months is a great time to train a dog with basic commands and housbreaking....time and effort is all it takes....

Try a dog flap , if you cannot use one for whatsoever reason then try this , whenever he craps inside the house make sure you rub his nose in it immediately scolding him loudly and make sure that whenever you take him for a walk and he craps outside that you give him a treat immediately, believe me you will see results real fast

a good way is to allow the pup to gos toilet inside on the newspaper if he is desperate, he will then see he cant always get otuside so will have to make do. the newspaper can then eaily be disposed of, it works for me perfectly, he goes outisde when available and inside on aper when not available.
