most of the time the best if used by date is a taste thing. dairy products, eggs, and fresh vegetables that have expiration dates (i.e. bagged salads) i would not suggest eating past the date on the package. sometimes canned and jarred goods have code dates on them, you can find out the age of the product by calling the consumer hotline on the package. after being in the grocery business for 15 years i can tell you that the items with code dates never sit on the shelf at the store for very long.

Well, some details would've been helpful, but here's what I can advise: eat whatever it is by the date on the package, as a rule of thumb. If you're not sure about something, there's usually a customer hotline number on the package, call it and ask if something's still safe to eat. I did that once, turns out it wasn't safe and I'd bought it expired in the first place. I was so upset, the company sent me a big coupon towards another purchase. Hey, better safe than sorry, right?
