Ive been told that automotive oil is ok and it is a lot cheaper once you change it once a year

Hypoid 90 marine gear oil would be best to be on the safe side,although I can't see why automotive transmission oil should do any harm.

No! If your engine is a 2 stroke you have to use 2 stroke engine oil. 2 stroke engines burn oil, so if you did use automotive oil, which is designed for 4 stroke car engines, the engine would carbon up and it would still need to be replaced more than once a year because it will be burned the same.
