I had this so many times on mine.

It happens when you press both buttons together by accident.

Someone has accidentally pressed some buttons and locked you into test mode.
To get out of it you need to press start, the display should go daft. Press start again and the display should settle down. Now press the on/off button and the start button at the same time and hold them down for a few seconds until the display shows d-end or d-off.
Your machine should now work.

If memory serves me correctly - you will have to ring Hotpoint - there is a sequence of button presses you have to complete before it will reset - I had this trouble on another model - mine was caused simply by someone leaning on the machine and hitting the buttons at the same time - Hotpoint were supposed to have put an amendment into the manual to tell you how to get round it but I guess it never happened!

Hotpoint offices are in Peterborough - so it will be an 01733 number - can't tell you the rest I'm afraid
