Greetings,

Aside from just voting based on manufacturer, I'd have to say that neither one wins hands down, Here is why:

The Panasonic Camcorder is a classic when if comes of independent films. This camcorder rocks and it is still super cool. It has a film look with regards to coloring, gamma curve and even does 24P - all the while recording in standard definition.

The HVR Z1U is a stellar camcorder also. It's price tag is higher but it records in HDV! I have not heard much regarding the Color/Gamma and the film look with this camcorder but I'm pretty sure it does pretty well.

I believe that you have overlook a Camcorder that contains the best of both these Camcorders while delivering a good price. Canon just made a Camcorder called the XH A1. From the reviews that I have read from several magazines (several this month feature the A1 on the front cover), the color/gamma selection is outstanding and can mimic film and that the 24F function is outstanding. Keep in mind that it has a lot of the features/fillm look that the DVX 100B has while recording in high Definition!

The best part? It is one of the best priced camcorders out there for what you get.

You homework is ahead of you. Read a lot of the review. Each camcorder will have a different area that is excells. I believe the the A1 contains the best from both of the other Camcorders.

Before buying, consider if your computer has the power to edit HDV, and how important the film-look is to you. The DVX100 is one the best ways to create a film look without post-processing. However, there are programs out there that do this as well, such as Magic bullet. If high definition is a bigger factor than film-look, then go with the sony HVR-Z1U, although like the guy above me said, the canon XH-A1 is a great choice. Just remember that HDV editing is VERY processor intensive, and if possible, get a capture box such as AJA's LH series cards that will convert HDV to another type of HD for easier editing. Also, if you are considering the post-film look option, consider this. I have magic bullet suite 2 for after effects. My computer is a 2.67 ghz pentium 4, with 512 ram. I rendered a 4 second clip in after effects, using look suite (film look), deartifacting and deinterlacing, frame rate conversion to 24p, and opticals (fade in and out). It took about 8 minutes to render. However, that was with the whole package applied, and if your computer is faster, or you don't mind waiting 3-5 days for your movie to render, then this is a great choice, becuase you have more flexibility with film-looks. Or another option would be to rent. The HVX200 is a great camera, for a fairly low price, and records in DVCPRO HD instead of HDV. It also offers 24p recording, as well as over- and under-cranking, and offers film-look options as well. If you want HD with a film-look, without post processing, this might well be the best choice, not to mention it could save you a lot of money. I'm not saying renting is always the best choice, but if it fits your needs, then it's a great way to go. Hope this helps!

“the two products”? the two you pick to generically analyze manufacturers, or you pick to analyze particular fashions from each and each type. actual, the 1st assessment (manufacturers) hardly makes any experience, from a pragmatic point of view, till you pick to jot down an essay relating to the final business, technological & promoting and marketing strengths of each type, or something like that. yet whilst what you pick is to pick an actually digital camera for your self, what do you care if, say, Sony had like 95% of the stable cameras and Panasonic the the rest 5%? If between the few cameras in that 5% from Panasonic is the only that maximum almost suits your guy or woman photographic desires & concepts, then that Panasonic digital camera is the the main suitable option one for you, in spite of regular type comparisons. I certainly advise which you intently define precisely what you pick (fee, length, weight, optical zoom, ISO overall performance, decision, instruction manual/inventive controls, taking photos & focusing overall performance, and so on, and so on, and so on.), then pass discover the digital camera that maximum suitable suits your standards, in spite of whether it particularly is a Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Samsung, Casio or despite. or you danger *no longer* finding the main suitable digital camera for you, in simple terms on account which you probably did no longer seem outdoors of the type which you theory (or have been advised) that replaced into “generically extra perfect”.
