I used to have Vonage but if your phone goes out then that is when the fun began for me. I could only contact them via e-mail which I see hs changed but one feature I really needed was call blocking, I could not get so I dropped them. I got an all in one pack with my cable company and if you add my old cable bill and vonage I am actually paying 200/year less to have them all together. Look at the deals from the cable company. Plus if it goes out you don't have to spend days getting repair. just call the local cable company...

VOIP isn't ready for residential use yet. here is why

If you don't have a UPS (universal power supply) when you loose power you loose your phone. A conventional phone works of the power supplied from the Telephone Central Office. They are usually on both battery and generator backup.

If you loose you internet connection, again you loose you phone connection to.

You also don't have tradtional 911 service. No matter what they say 911 offered by cell phone companies and VOIP companies isn't the same.

I do see it as a viable alternative in the business world, because it does save cost on wire and maintance.
