What is the most important information I should know about codeine?

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to it, or if you have an uncontrolled breathing disorder, a bowel obstruction called paralytic ileus, or frequent asthma attacks or hyperventilation.
Codeine can slow or stop your breathing. Never use this medicine in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. Codeine may also be habit-forming, even at regular doses. Never share this medicine with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medicine in a place where others cannot get to it.
MISUSE OF NARCOTIC MEDICINE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription.
Medicines that contain codeine should not be given to a child just after surgery to remove the tonsils or adenoids.
Get emergency medical help if a child taking this medicine has breathing problems, blue lips, or severe drowsiness, or if you cannot wake the child up from sleep.

You can take upto 60mg at one time, but every 6 hours. 240mg codeine is the most you can have in 24 hours as long as it is taken at 6 hour intervals.
This dose is a prescribed dose though, so your doc should be aware you are on that dose.
Codeine can constipate, and probably will do at that dose, so drink plenty of water.

240mg is the maximum dosage for an adult in 24hrs so it is quite a lot. If you are concerned about taking amount you should discuss this with your pharmacist or GP and they can help you find other approaches to pain relief. If you do continue to take this amount (or even a smaller dosage) you should drink a lot of water to avoid constipation. Also increasing your fibre intake substantially can be of great benefit. Be very careful if you are affected by sudden drowsiness like I was!!

Yes it is but depending on what kind of pain you are treating it may not be. If you are taking 60 mg. tablets every 4 hours that
would 240 mg a day. It is very constipating also. If it is what
you and your doctor agree on for your type of pain it should be ok, if you are not with a doctor and doing this on your own, you could be in a lot of trouble down the road. If there is Tylenol with
the pills there is an even greater risk of liver failure.

240mg? In 30mg tabs, two tabs four times a day? That is what I take too. I find it can make you sleepy, and quite constipated if you are not careful with the diet.
IMO if you need the pain relief you need the pain relief.

Firstly are you taking the prescribed amount (the amount on the label), secondly I would advise you to check the patient leaflet in the pack and see what the average dose is there. Failing that make and appointment with your doctor or pharmacist and ask them.
