In food, how was the term "deviled" originate? To me, the term sounds very much like the food is poisoned, hexed or accursed! Math_Maestro.

Deviled food usually is hot and/or spicy. Like deviled eggs or deviled ham. I love deviled eggs with paprika on top.

Devilled means highly spiced and hot - hence the link to the devil/hell. It also refers to food that has been adulterated and is no longer in it's pure form. This 'adulteration' is linked with the devil as purity is Godly.

Technically it’s the mustard in “deviled” foods that makes them as such.
