You are the cause of poverty refers to the fact that some people are really rich and others are left with nothing. He thinks you are selfish and spoilt. OOORRR...You must have done something pretty horrible, imagine: the cause of poverty is a pretty terrible thing. It is DEFINITELY an insult in this case. OORR...maybe he thinks (even in a cute way) that you are one of those typical girls who loves to shop...you know "one day, you'll cause poverty with all you buy!"
