There's a great deal of luck involved in being successful, and hard work cannot always overcome bad luck. On the other hand laziness will often overcome good luck and a lot of potential.

My personal thought is that one must work hard to reach the fullest amount of success he's been fated to have. I think we're fated to fall into a certain bracket, but where in tha bracket we fall is determined by us.

The ditch digger might never be a millionare no matter what he does, but if he quits his job, he will be poor, and if he works super hard he might get promoted to a supervisor and make a few thousand more.

I think it's a combination of the two because life is unpredictable, yet people must work hard to achieve anything truly great and noble.

Hard, and smart, work.

Digging ditches is hard work, but not very smart.

Owning the ditch digging company is hard work too, but much smarter.
