I have a 15 year old daughter who is depressed and over weight . She has tried loosing weight, she has been exercising 3 times a week for an hour and a half and watches what she eats and hasn't been able to loose. She has also had her T4 and TSH levels checked three times in less then 2 yrs and they have come back in the normal range. Her therapist has suggested putting her back on anti-depressents for depression. Does anyone know if there are any anti-depressent meds that will help her loose vs gain weight?

Thanks,
Her Mom

I know for a fact that Celexa doesnt cause weight gain, I am on it and it can cause weight loss. I use to be in Paxil and it caused weight gain, when I switched I lost 20 pounds.
I also have a condition called PCOS which effects your hormones. you should have your Dr. Check her for those levels that cause PCOS, polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
I Pray for the very best for you and your daughter.
God bless

Some of the SSRI's can have the side effect of reducing appitite, some like fluoxetine (Prozac) or citalopram (Celexa) are used to treat bulima.

Has your daughter been checked for BED (binge eating disorder) are you 1,000,000% sure she is not eating in secret?
But if she is exercising has no thyroid issues, really is following a calorie controlled intake and still has no signs of weight loss, you need to contact a doctor again.

I have a BED and have had 2 years of group therapy and SSRI's to deal with the issues that lead me to use food to deal with anxiety. I have never lost weight whilst using the drugs, but neither did I gain any more weight. I can honestly say the therapy is more valuble than the drugs, the drugs just bridge the gaps to enable one to function on a basic level, ie actual manage to get up, get dressed and leave the house. Although I expect your daughter isn't quite down at that level yet.

Best to talk to the therapist more than anything, if you're not sure about the therapist you have, get a second opinion if you can.
Not all therapist are equal, and not all will connect with your daughter.

I hope she finds her path :0)

Hi there. So young to have all these problems. Remeron, which I take before bedtime, has not given me any extra weight. I'm slim to start with, and have maintained my weight over the past 2 years with this medication.

I know Wellbutrin makes a lot of people gain weight, and fast. Sorry, but that's all I can say for sure. Please say hello to your daughter for me!

i have been on anti depressant for seven years and in my experience they all tend to put on weight sorry, check with the doc though, maybe there are new ones to the market that dont have this side effect good luck!
also, why not invest in having a personal trainer kick start her diet and fitness routine, they are expensive, but so are therapists and psychiatrists, they may just have the combination your daughter needs to start acheicing success with her weight loss and maybe start feeling better about herself naturally

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
