I've found that avast! works wonderfully. It has always caught everything which is a difficult task with my younger siblings and slightly less than computer savvy parents using the computer and internet. It is free for home use, and is kept very up to date since it is a program that companies have to pay a small fortune for. They say that they distribute it free to the public since the best way to stop viruses is prevention, before they get so big they are taking out the companies that run our economy. It is kinda a pain to set up since you have to download it, install it, and than get a one year access code, but once it's done it does very well. I also recommend turning all of the On-Access scanner setting to high, as it is only added protection and as of yet I have not had it block anything I wanted. I have had it for three years on several computers and never had a virus. Good luck and I hope this helps you out some!

AVG Free and Avast! are two very good antivirus products.
Ad-Aware is a good anti spyware which is free.
