Fasting is refraining from eating your normal meals. It may be total fasting, or reducing your food intake. The sole purpose is to be closer to God. You are the master of your body. The body is not the master of you. Jesus fasted for forty days before he started his ministry. Fasting is observed in the Old testament way before Jesus. Remember the story of Nineveh. God was about to destroy it. but they fasted and prayed and were spared. Fasting is your way of giving up comfort for the glory of God. It makes you one with the poor, who are always hungry. Denying food and relying on God's providence is what fasting is all about. More important than fasting is prayer, though.

Fasting is used by many religions to cleanse the body and spirit. The idea being that of course, the body will empty the digestive system and without adding anything, it will be clean. Asfor the spirit, eating is a basic necessity of life, conquering it means conquering our very nature. Fasting is a good way to make a point to oneself, but should never be undertaken without considering your health. If you are sick, pregnant, injured (major injury like a break requiring extra energy and nutrition to heal) then you should not fast. The very young and very old should not fast and if you are trying to get pregnant you should not fast.

Fasting is:
1. To abstain from food.
2. To eat very little or abstain from certain foods,
especially as a religious discipline.

Your religion is usually the deciding factor on how important fasting is. Some do it to drop pounds quickly and others do it for religious reasons to show their commitment to their faith.

Fasting inculcates a sense of fraternity and solidarity, as Muslims will feel and experience that which their needy and hungry brothers and sisters feel; however, even the poor, needy, and hungry may participate in the fast. Moreover, Ramadan is a month of giving charity and sharing meals to break the fast together, the latter offering more reward than if eating alone.

Fasting in the month of Ramadan is an essential part of being a Muslim. Muslims fast from dawn until sundown - abstaining from food and drink, and guarding themselves from destructive behavior.

Those who are sick, elderly, or on a journey, and women who are pregnant or nursing, are permitted to break the fast and make up an equal number of days later in the year. Children begin to fast (and to observe prayers) from puberty, although many start earlier.

God states in the Qur'an: "O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed to those before you that you may achieve greater awareness (of God)." (Qur'an 2:183)

Fasting is not only beneficial to health, but it also allows one to truly empathize with those less fortunate. However, fasting is mainly a method of self-purification and self-restraint. By cutting oneself from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person focuses on his or her purpose in life by constantly being aware of God.

Ramadan is a special time for Muslims everywhere; a time for reflection and greater spirituality. The end of Ramadan is observed by a holiday - Eid al Fitr. On this day, Muslims all over the world celebrate with prayers and an exchange of gifts.
