I did that all the time as a teen... never scarred me

well part of that is a myth. you only get the scars if the pimples are not ready to pop or if it is severe chronic acne. if there is a white head then it is okay to gently squeeze that little white puss out and you'll be fine. now if they are the large ones and it is still under the skin that is when you have to be careful. if you are drawing blood, once any blood comes out, simply dab the blood and then be sure to use a washcloth on it and let it air dry and leave it alone AS SOON AS IT BEGINS TO BLEED. When i say this i mean if you start to try to pop and then a little pin hole size bit of blood begins to seep then it is important to stop at that point in order to prevent scarring..any further and you are "digging" and then you are going to be going into the skin.

I have had thousands of pimples and have popped several hundred and i have maybe 2 scars and umm, i didn't even pop those 2!! Most of the scarring by pimples is from the severe chronic acne and is not caused by normal acne and the "popping" that goes with it at all.

The jury is currently split on popping zits... There is some newer research that indicates that popping them and then deep cleaning the area might be better for you in the long run. When I was a teen, I had a little fewer than the average number of pimples, and popped every one (and still do.... 44 freakin' years old and still get them now and then... sigh...). I think getting rid of them helped prevent more, and none of them ever left a mark. Go to a reliable web site like Mayo Clinic or WebMD and search under acne care for the latest study data... Ed, RN

Popping her pimples is not a good idea, they leave scars (on most people). When you do pop your pimples, whether you do it with sterile equipment, gloves, etc. you are not getting all the oil and dirt out of your skin. You are actually pushing the oil and dirt (that is deep in the skin) back down and it only causes the pimples to come back. My suggestion to her is to find a dermatologist to help her with her pimples. I use Proactiv and it works wonders!! I have popped my pimples most of my life and it helps reduce the scaring I received when I popped them. Then again, not everyone is going to have the same reaction. My best answer is to find something that will work for her besides popping her pimples!! :) I hope that this helps.

Get her interested in preventing acne. I think the best product on the market is Proactive Solution. It's easy to use, and results are fast. After a month, your friend won't have pimples to pop.

Ask your friend how she knows there won't be any scarring. I think she might just be saying that to get you off her back. Depending on how serious her acne is, yes she could get scarring.

Take her shopping with you one day and look for facial cleansers. Smell a bunch of them, see which one she likes, and buy it. If she's not washing her face daily already, the nice smell might motivate her to wash once or more a day.

There's really nothing you can do, she has to make all the decisions.

I always popped my pimples, and now I have scarring. Tell her to knock it off. If she uses something sterile to pop them, after washing with antibiotic soap though, it would be okay. There are like zit popping loops out there... we have them in the manicure section of all places at my store. You can boil the tool in water to sterilize it. Getting the pus out does speed healing, but ONLY IF you don't let more bacteria in!
