iM wondering at what age babies actually start to talk properly? My son babbles on and chats but in nothing recognisable. He is 16 months old. I hear about stories of kids saying proper sentances and words at 1 or just over.. is this tru?

each child talks at different times...my first child talked at one and could say simple sentences....but my second refused to talk until he was three...he would not even say a word here or there....he did everything any other child done at his age ..except talk.....he would point and make a sound like "aaaaaa"...and no matter what I did to try and make him talk..he refused....we took him to several doctors and had his hearing tested..and nothing was wrong ....they all told me the same thing...he would talk when he was ready...and they were not kidding..once he started he has not stopped..lol...

If you are concerned..you might want to take him to a doctor and have him checked over and also have his hearing tested ..just to make sure he isn't having a problem in this area.....

It probably is nothing..but it never hurts to have doctor's opinion..and it might relieve any anxiety you maybe having....

You might consider having a speech evaluation done, just so you know where he stands and to get him speech therapy if he needs it. All children learn at different levels and boys are usually a little slower than girls. At 16 months, if you aren't getting the customary mama, dada, baba, hello, hi, bye there is a good chance that his speech is delayed; keep in mind that all 16 month old babies babble but they should have some recognizable words too. It's not the end of the world if he has a speech delay, but waiting will only make the delay worse and the delay could be a symptom of something else that can be managed if you have him evaluated. Good luck.

I firstly want to say that god some people can be sooo rude(mutant).
I have twin boys aged two and they are only starting to put words together but they also still babble in their language.
I stopped comparing my children to others and believe they will do everything when they are ready. In saying that i still spend quality time showing them educational books which enhances their development in speech
Your son is only 16 months give him a bit longer then if you are still concerned then maybe look into it.
Best Wishes :)

I have a little brother who is now three. (Im 21). At about 12 months he started with little words, but they were not totally clear. He had slight problems walking as well. After a few trips to the ped they realized that he needed tubes. He got them around 18 months. Honestly within three days after having the tubes put in, he started taking much clearer and said a million times more words. The fluid in his ears made our words sound mumbled to him so thats how he repeated them.

Get his hearing checked and have the doctor check his ears to make sure that there isnt an infection in them.

He's not retartded. That person should appologize. Anyway, my son is 16 months also. He says a few words and they are barely recognizable. We always repeat them on a daily basis. If you have a dog----point to it and say dog to him. If you're watching out the window point to the cars and say car. Pick up a ball and repeat ball. That's how our son got to know some words. Again, when he says them, you can barely tell that's what he said.

Your son is normal. It will come to him in time. It will happen all at once. Might be next month!!!

no your child is not deformed or anything, we are going through that with our son right now, come to find out after the 5th ear infection he has tubes now. and it made a world of difference he still has problems saying somethings but majority of it is clearer than it has ever been, and yes kids do Develope at different stages. If you are really concerned about it have his hearing tested and see what they say about it.

He's normal. My daughter just turned 2 and she's just barely starting to make sence.A lot of what she says still is just practice.Don't worry yourself.Your son will start talking and pretty soon you'll be wishing he was back to babbling. You can help him by streigthening his tounge to give him better control over what sounds he wants to make.Practice by playing fallow the leader...stick your tounge out at him and wait till he does it back.Keep doing that, eventually add sound. He'll get it!!

There's no other explanation he must be retarded. He'll talk when he feels like it. He's just a baby.
