I'm try to figure a way to keep it up without doing a crown of braids. (do that for work) It won't hold curls and I refuse to get a perm. Fortunately it has different shades of blonde, so if I have any gray, it doesn't show.

U mention that it does not hold curls, have u been to a licensed Beautician to do this. U may not want to cut your hair but maybe u should get a slight trim so that is does. I would never try and tell anyone that has long hair to cut it , but maybe so that it still in your back. U might need to use some sort of spritz to keep your curls in your hair. And have u tried some type of updo. It does not have to so big r even so hard with curls. There are many variations. U could get a nice holder for your hair like in a ponytail and from there start curling to have falling curls around your head. Good luck and Congrats!
