Does this mean it needs a scratching post?

Your cat is rubbing her head on you to "mark" you with her scent.

In answer to your question, YES your cat should have a scratching post.
It's best to get one with a vertical post and also a horizontal scratching area on the bottom...most cats like to stretch with them scratch, but others prefer to scratch on a flat surface.

A scratching post will save your carpet but not your calf. Cats have scent glands in their cheeks and neck that they use to rub on things to mark their territory. It's relatively harmless. The scratching though can lead to many problems, namely your carpet and furniture being ripped to shreds. Cats do this to sharpen and stretch their claws, a bit like people cracking their knuckles. Buy your cat a scratching post and attach a few dangling toys to it.

Get your cat a scratching post...without question.
He needs a place to stretch and sharpen his nails and it will prolong the life of your carpet and other furniture.
Rubbing it's head on your leg or calf simply is a show of affection, usually related to the fact he's hungry and knows that you are the one that can feed him. I bet this happens a lot in the kitchen?
When you pick up the scratching post, buy a box or bag of catnip...
take any clean, old socks and put some catnip inside and tie a big knot about the size of a baseball and toss it on the floor...hours of fun for your cat.

3 possibilities here...
1) she's telling she loves you. She rubs against you because she can't say "hey, Bob". It's kinda like her way of calling you or pointing at you. She "kneads" the carpet because this was a comfort thing she did when she was with her mother. In other words, she's saying, "hey you!! love ya!!"
2) you're rubbing her or scratching her and she saying "oh yeah, right there, ya that's the spot, feeeeels sooo gooood"
3) is she spayed? If not, it could be the hormones kicking in.

No your cat doesn't need a scratching post. when she rubs against you and digs its claws in the carpet it means they are happy to see you and want you to pet them.

Cats rub things to put their scent on it. And, yes, your cat needs a scratching post or it will start scratching your couch.

Hi Nofear, You cat is showing that he or she loves you. This is he or shes way of telling you. It wouldn't hurt to get a scratch post for your pet. They do like to sharpening their toe nails on the furniture. This will help to prevent that from happening.
A Friend.

Scratching posts don't work. The cat will shred whatever it deems important to you. Cats do have a favorite spot to scratch on, couch and chair corners especially. My cat likes to scratch the couch and the entryway rug. The scratching post(S) go untouched.
