EV mode in Prius is standard on European and ASian version. Whats the reason they disengaged in in the US

To conform with the EPA's testing methodology, a manually-activated EV mode is not available from the factory.

However, there are hacks to install an EV-mode button.

We are usually the last ones to get the technology. For example, the Prius in Japan already has the automatic parellel parking function like the Lexus LS460. I think we should be the first to get the technology since most of the Priuses are sold here.

The redesigned 2008 Highlander Hybrid will have the EV mode.

The reason is emissions control. Supposedly running in EV mode too long would enable the catalyst to cool and reduce the efficacy of the catalytic converter.
