I was talking to this guy and it was the cutest thing, I could actually hear him smile on the phone. I'm wondering if this can be faked or maybe I just have low self esteem.

I honestly don't think a guy would go out of his way to fake a smile on the phone, especially since he knows you can't see him obviously. I think you're just putting too much thought into it. Relax and be excited that he enjoys talking to you! Don't let your insecurities ruin all your fun!

Yes, it can be faked since it's on the phone. What you might have heard is facial hair rubbing up on the phone.
