Nowadays they use books just like us. For whatever reason, the codex (book form) was invented in the West and took some time to move East. This is rather ironic, considering that paper from wood pulp was invented in China and later moved West.

I am not sure why China might not have invented the codex independently. Perhaps the primary advantages (compactness and saving of paper) was not seen as a major advantage in a society of such wealth. The other advantage of random access to information within was perhaps either unnoticed or not appreciated. Or they could have had a blind spot because they didn't use tablets (which were the original use of the book form, tables bound together).Or perhaps it was just luck

As an aside. Even though the book is far more useful for us, at least some people still have a use for scroll format (see last link).
