Well, I know it's about 40,000 now, if that helps at all.

That was well before the merger of Transit and Housing Police into NYPD. Transit and Housing each had about 3000 officers and NYPD was about 24,000 strong. In 1995 Housing and Transit were merged into the NYPD and the numbers rose to about 32,000. Traffic Enforcement (from D.O.T.) came shortly after that and in Dec 1998 the School Safety Div (from B.O.E.)was merged. There was a brief decrease during the Beame years when all three Police Depts suffered lay offs.

Being American i might decide to assert NYPD, yet which would be incorrect. The RCMP is the equivalent of the FBI and can relatively win that one. possibly in case you coated extra police departments because of the fact the RCMP is national.
