Haber is complicated. If haber is followed by a noun, then the correct form is había, regardless of whether the object is singular or plural. If haber is followed by another verb (in the ado/ido form) then haber is conjugated according to the subject, so a plural subject would have habían. "había muchas cosas" and "ellos habían pizcado" are correct.
