From the perspective of the tactical war in Vietnam, North Vietnam won. They achieved their goals of conquering the south and putting the entire country under communist control.
This is a unique situation in warfare because by any measure, the US military "won" every single engagement of the conflict. The US "lost" in the sense that the country was not up to fighting the war that was required. The media and peace protesters succeeded in delivering the first ever "defeat" of US military forces in a foriegn war by not having the stomach to fight. The second instance of this is manifesting right now in Iraq. This time, many thousands of American civilians will pay with their lives, however. The most interesting part of the Vietnam conflict is that the biggest victory for the US forces and the most crushing defeat for the NVA was the Tet Offensive. However, it is this very event that Walter Cronkite spun into the myth of defeat and used it to convince 19 year old college kids that we could never win.
In the large sense of the strategic campaign of the cold war, the US "won" in Vietnam by proving that the country had at least enough fortitude to stick out an ideological battle 5000 miles from home for 10 years. This, along with many other factors, caused a shift in Soviet thinking and eventually led to the fall of communism. This was the USA's strategic goal all along.

No one really wins a war. Though the communist ended up controlling all of Vietnam, I guess, in a way you can say they won, but a very large number of Vietnamese died in process. I'm sure to many of the families of the dead on all sides of the war it was a loss.

The US didn't win because they pulled out, and South Vietnam collapsed when North Vietnam took it over... So I guess you can basically say North Vietnam won because they got what they wanted. One Vietnam under a communist (North Vietnamese) government system.

the vietnam war.... that is difficult.
there wasn't a winner. but sadiest is that the
men and woman that fought over there were
there without the nations support.
never should you have to be sacrificing without respect.
you don't have to agree with war. just that the people that go are there to protect freedom and our ability to stand and say it.
vietnam war to me..... we won. we are still free.
