My husband wants me to have a system that can find me if I am disabled in a wreck and can't get to my cell phone. An ordinary GPS reciever is not suitable to him. Does anybody else make a system than GM?

You must own a car with it.

You may consider getting a new car if you are that concerned. It's going to be really hard to find anyone else that offers the amenities that onstar offers anywhere else.

Although I have landrover and they offer there own exclusive program that does the same as Onstar plus books vacations, dinner reservations, finds the nearest gas station and about a billion other things.

Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Lexus all over there own versions of Onstar in there cars much like that of the Landrovers.

Unlike it is stated below my car company does pretty much all the things that Onstar does. There is also an emergency button where if you came across an accident, or where being attacked in the car you can hit the button and police are notified instantly. The only difference, they don't unlock your downs with the click of a button, they send someone within 30 minutes to unlock it.

Good luck.

Nobody else has a version of Onstar other than Onstar
The telematic capabilities of Onstar are much more than booking reservations, and reminding you to change your oil. Onstar will automatically call for help if you have a collision. If your car gets stolen, Onstar can find it for the police. Onstar systems can remotely diagnose your vehicle if you get a warning light on. Onstar can unlock your car for you or beep the horn if you can't find it. Onstar has turn by turn navigation that eliminates the need for a giant screen and map disks that quickly go out of date and are expensive to replace.
I was taking a trip recently and after a few hours on the road my wife realized she forgot her insulin. A press to Onstar fixed the issue. The consultant called my wifes pharmacy. got the perscription information. Found are location and direction of travel. Called ahead to a pharmacy on our way. Got an emergency supply of insulin waiting for us at that pharmacy. And gave us turn by turn directions to get there and the name of the pharmasist to ask for.
There are a few cheap imitations out there, but none have the capabilities of Onstar
