absolutely horrible to other people...and you really totally don't associate with those persons..and or family members who long ago, did some very bad things...and you never knew till just now...in finding about your family histories?
(I have had one "really ignorant "member...before I was born, that was in that horrific group that kills and hurts people from other races...ironically, he probably would have killed me...because he wouldn't have approved of me, either...as I am half Jewish, 1/8th Mexican-American/Native American..and other things...as well!)He also would have gone after other family members...if he were still alive...(but, thank God, he isn't!!!) this was years ago!!!!But, I really think that it is such a horrible shame..that people are this cruel...and ignorant at the same time...I do not like at all, what these people do to so many wonderful people in this world....it is a painful issue for me, just thinking about people like him!

Regarding the anti-racial member of my family...ya know, I have to say that when I read stories in the paper or hear on the news about others that harm people because of their race...it hurts me so deeply and I feel sooo terribly sad...I just wish I could be a Protector at times....
(There was a young man that was dragged while tied to a truck...that hurt and I cried my eyes out...I am soooo very enraged that a human being was treated like that! (and it STILL happens..and it needs to end now!!!! and never happen ever again, anywhere!!!!!)
We are all a part of one another..and that is really how I feel! I hope that someday, those that do these things..get a punishment that shows them the suffering of people that they have hurt or killed! They need to really understand !!!! That is how I honestly feel!!

That's horrible. No, no murderers in my family that I know of. But, my family is like a candy bar, it's sweet, but, with a few nuts strewn about.

Wow, I'd love to know about the blacksheep list!
I just found a genuine "colourful racing identity" in my extended family, who was even described as becoming a "minor folk hero" for his taking on the "big end" of town on behalf of "working class gamblers." I love it!
But about an hour later I found a distant cousin who was a murder victim (which I am yet to find details on) and wasn't quite so thrilled. It's interesting, but sobering. I've been looking at a lot of war records lately, and that's really made me think about a lot of things, as you can imagine.
Honestly, I'd probably be a little nonplussed to find a relative that was actually a murderer (with my history it's unlikely I'll find a member of the Nazi party or Ku Klux Klan, but you never know...) But I'd like to think I'd look at the bigger picture and wonder what the circumstances were, what the prevailing attitudes were at the time etc. I've found two fairly close relatives who apparently committed suicide, and all I feel is sorrow and compassion for them, though had I actually known them I'm sure anger and blame would have come into the picture too.

I haven't found any really notorious persons in my family, but finding less than perfect ones, actually, for me, has offered healing and forgiveness. Think about it.. the sad reality is that there are/have been countless people on this earth that are bad, even evil. And they all probably have relatives who are NOTHING like them at all. In fact, you can choose to use your knowledge as a source of pride, in that you are a good person.
I do LOTS of research... and I have learned to detach from judging any facts. They are just facts, neither good or bad, and fit into the puzzle. I also made a personal committment, that when I do find information, to the best I can, insure it is used for good purposes. I love seeing long lost family reunited, for example.
And to lighten it up some... there actually is a email list called Blacksheep ancestors, where you need a notorious relative to join. I kid you not. On that list, I found the descendent of a murderer, while in the process of researching on behalf of a descendent of the murder victim! And yes, the two got in touch with each other in a friendly and cordial manner.
Thanks for giving me the opening to express what is most meaningful to me, about genealogy.

My great, great grandfather smuggled goods and confederate sympathizers in and out of Maryland. Fortunately for me, he wasn't caught because if he would have been hanged and I may never have existed. He and his family were slave holders in Maryland. I can however say that the family maintained associations with many of the former slaves and their descendents. My grandfather grew up knowing the families of the former slaves and working with them on the family farm. He and his siblings were always told to treat them with respect or else. Other than my great great grandfather, my family has been pretty ordinary.

Going as far back as human history goes, we all probably have a few in there someplace. Best thing we all can do is just leave them where they belong, in the past...we are the ones that have set it right (hopefully) in attitude some generations down the line.

One of my 2nd great grandmothers had a brother whose occupation was listed in the 1880 census as a "professional horse thief." And one of my 2nd great grandfathers had a brother who was supposed to be taking the tax money to the county seat for his neighborhood, and disappeared with it instead. He went missing for several months, but eventually came home.
I'm sorry to learn of racially oriented hate crimes; some of my ancestors were anti-slavery activists in Philadelphia before 1700.
