You may be able to get an anti-static spray (also fabric softeners) that can help reduce the static buildup (spray it on the carpet). Try not to shuffle you feet when walk on a carpet. If the spark bothers you, carry a small metal object (like a screwdriver or a key) and use it to discharge the electricity before touching the knob. You will draw a spark, but you won't feel it.

keep in mind that water alone does not conduct, but salt + water does, and both happen to be components on your skin. Consider, then, what would happen if you isolated one of these, namely the salts of your skin. Grounding yourself also works. Use your other hand to hold a metal object if possible, though the lack of transference within a certain time may still cause some feedback from the initial touch.

Touch the ground before you touch the door handle. May seem silly, but it works.
