Im 33 rs old and have been drinking 8 ounces of DM cough syrup pretty much daily since I was 19 yrs old. I cant seem to get through a day without it, for the last 3 yrs or so I have also been smoking crack pretty much whenever I can get money for it also. I know what I am doing is wrong but I just cant seem to get through a day without a buzz. The lonest Ive been without a buzz is 30 days since 1991 and that was because I was in jail. Ive been in several rehabs over the years but always left early. I am the father of three chrildren, 2 girls ages 13 and 11 and a boy age 3. In one sense I want to die to stop this abuse but also want to live to see my kids grow up. My girls already know Im an addict but my son is too young, how do I escape this madness?(I just cant imagine going a day without a buzz of some sort)

Well, your honesty is good, got to hand it to you there.

I understand your very serious question and I assure you, you are not alone. Many people, if not most people, do need something to escape their own mental wheels. It is no secret that alcohol has claimed many people. The absurdity is that there are easier ways to vacation from one's own mind, but they are deemed illegal by mindsets that care not a whit about your life. I am sorry that you have been in jail and rehab and all this madness is still ongoing.

I don't know what you are doing for an income, but whatever income is available to you might be well spent on a good doctor that can legally medicate you to the degree necessary for you to be able to cope. I am an advocate of sympathy for the human condition and that is my best advice: Get medical help if you can afford it. Good luck and hang in there.

Since you recognize the addiction is a serious problem you need to start there. Get yourself into a rehab asap and make the committment to yourself to see it through, not just for your kids and the people who care for you. You deserve a life that's happy too and not simply a buzz to escape a painful or unfulfilling existence. You know you're numbing the pain or replacing it with things that aren't real or substantial and you deserve better than that, we all do. Don't settle for a temporary fix when real happiness is what you want. Set your sights on the prize and commit yourself to work for it. You do need to be substance free before you can begin to learn what it is you need to be fulfilled and in order to understand your own emotional needs. You won't learn how to cope with the pain and discomfort you are self-medicating away until you allow yourself to feel it and the rugs prevent that. You're tougher than you think and just think how proud you'd feel to be able to really stay clean yourself.
Follow up the rehab with therapy because getting sober is only the first step, then the really hard work begins. And for goodness sake, get yourself to some NA meetings and start building supports around you. You may already feel as though you've lost the support of your family some by disappointing them repeatedly and that's why support groups are so critical.
Lastly, one day at a time. Each day sober is one step closer to the prize. If you relapse, start over again. The periods of sobriety will get longer if you keep trying. Good luck!!!!!!!!

Well you can be like me and just keep thinking you won't get cought and end up 2 years (minimum) in prison for 1.7 grams. once you do 21 mo. on a 24 you'll come out clean. But the key Is Jesus Christ He is the only one who can help you with that addiction. Romans 12:2 Says Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of you mind, that you may PROVE what is GOOD and ACCEPTABLE and the perfect will of God. And Gods perfect will is for everyone to be saved through his son Jesus Christ. Man, hook up with a good church and go with it. Iv'e been sober 7 1/2 years now but only through Christ. a nother thing that has helped me is you can't succseed until you fail. Good luck! And God Bless.

What on earth are you doing to yourself and your children, aren't you being very selfish. Why the buzz! You hit the nail on the head when you said you always leave rehab early, big mistake. Don't you want to see your kids grow up, do they really need to see their father in this state. I am afraid you have to consider long term rehab, 12moths or more, cos if you don't the mental health workers, court and police with section you there so you have no choice. I have had to do the same with someone very close to me but hey I was not going to sit around and watch him die

I think that's the most time anyone has said or typed some form of the word serious in a paragraph. I seriously think you deserve an award.

everyone is an addict of something.
most don't quit ever or until their life depends on it.

it sounds like there isn't enough reason for you to quit so just enjoy what you are doing and quit complaining.

you probably won't live as long as others but you know that already.
just enjoy the now.

Since you have been in several rehabs, you already know how serious this is. What else can we tell you? Get help and make it work or you are going to die soon.

Is there a possibility of getting into a program that is locked down? That way you will not be able to leave the program and will have to complete it.

There is a very large possibility that you will kill yourself by this behavior. Please try to get treatment for yourself and to benefit your children also.

Your deep understanding of responsibility & love towards your children can heal you. Will to smoke & will not to smoke or drink are fighting inward....try to shift your focus on something like music, cinema, early rising etc.
Try hard....you have got only one life to live.
