what evidence do you have to show that a child understands object permanence, and cause and effect reasoning?

Object permanance is pretty easy--if they drop something off the highchair and then lean over to look for it, they get it. They understand that what they dropped still exists and is down there somewhere. Separation anxiety is another evidence of this. Until a child has object permanence, there's no real separation anxiety. Out of sight, out of mind. Once they realize mommy exists when she leaves the room, watch out!

I think cause and effect starts very early. My 10 month old has known what "no" means for a couple months now. When I first started saying no to him, like for touching an outlet, I smacked his hand. It didint' take him long at all to realize that no means STOP whatever he's about to do. That's cause and effect reasoning if I've ever seen it!

For the object permanence, if you show the child a toy or piece of food, then put it under a napkin, and the child tries to take the napkin off to get to the item - they have learned about object permanence.

As an early childhood education major, I would not do your homework for you. However I will direct you to Piaget and do a search on Early childhood behavior for examples of object permanence and cause and effect reasoning.

And as for cause and effect reasoning, discipline a child for a simple wrong action such as pushing the off button of a TV that you're watching and then watch the child the next time he/she is about to do it again. If they look at you (the discipliner) as if to question, "I wonder if I'll be disciplined again..." you have your answer.
