You have to read the whole story. When one reads the story in its entirety, they will see that Solomon obviously never intended to cut a baby in half. He knew that the true mother of the baby in question would step forward and say the other woman could have her baby so that the baby could live. Solomon basically called these women's bluff because he knew he could find out the identity of the true mother this way. Yes, Solomon was truly wise. When God offered him anything he wanted because he found favor with God, he could have chosen vast wealth, many kingdoms, whatever. Instead, he chose wisdom. God was so pleased with his choice that He not only gave him wisdom, but he was known far and wide for the wisdom he possessed.

The baby was never cut in half. By making this ruling,he knew who the real mother was by the one objecting the most to anyone harming the baby, then he knew who the real mother was.
That is why he was wise.
The story is that there were two women claiming to be the mother and the King had to make a decision on who the real mother was.

If you had bothered reading the whole story, you would've understood that there was NEVER any intention of cutting the baby in half! Solomon used the threat merely as a ploy to uncover the real mother of the child, since he knew a true mother wouldn't suffer her child to see death for any reason. The real mother offered to give the child to the LYING mother, rather than see it killed for the sake of her love for the child.

because Solomon knew that the real mother would not want the baby to be cut in half so she would offer the child to the other woman. So that way the real mother was discovered.

It is generally thought that the Book of Proverbs may have been written by Solomon. It is brimming with wonderful day to day living advice.
...But when it came to the order to spilt the child... he knew that no woman would want any harm to ever come to a child of her own. There is a special love that parents feel for their own children from birth. ...Even before.
When the other woman was bitter and told him to go ahead - Solomon knew there was no way she was the mother.
When the true mother cried out to spare the child and give it to the other woman, Solomon saw that the true mother would rather sacrifice her future relationship with her own child - than see it killed. This was evidence of real love.
Solomon had asked God for wisdom - and God gave it to him abundantly. Only a true parent would do anything to save his/her children. He gave the baby to the true mother once his trick order revealed who she was.
Yes. Solomon was brilliant.
Peace dear one. --De

Look, umm, I'm not into the whole "Bible" thing, but Solomon said what he said because he was trying to see who the real mother was. By saying he was going to cut the kid in half, the real mother would panic while the fake one would go "Yeah, sure."
If he did cut the baby, that would have been unwise. But the real mother went into a panic like suspected. And I'm guessing in his time, the punishment for lying was being cut in half, so fake mom didn't last much longer, I think.

You missed the point.... he did so because he was indeed wise. Only a real mother would rather give up her child to the wrong, pretending mother than totally lose her child. It takes great sacrifice for a real mother to do so. Hence, he knew that the real mother was the one who would rather forfeit the child rather than have the child killed. Solomon was indeed wise for this act.

He was a very wise man. Two women both claimed to be the mother of a child. Since he could not determine which was telling the truth, he said that he would divide the child between them. Of course, the woman who was lying agreed to it, because she was so spiteful that she would have rather seen the child killed than to admit her deceit, or to give the child back to his rightful mother. The real mother loved her child enough to relinquish him to the other woman, just to save his life, even if she couldn't have him herself. Solomon knew that any real mother would do this, and so he gave the child to her.

Boy did you miss the ball on that one. (and I suspect you already know that). King Solomon had no intention of cutting the child in half. He knew that the true mother would love the child more than the one that was pretending and would rather sacrifice having her child than to see it hurt. Funny, kind of sounds a little like God and Jesus doesnt it? God sacrificed something he loved dearly so that we may live because he loves us above all.
