i think it was already said, but the common cold is caused by a virus and symptoms usually last anywhere between 5-7 days with the 3rd and 4th day being the worst. unfortunately if you've already had the symptoms for a few days there's really not much u can do except fluids and rest. OTC meds like sudafed are good, BUT u should know ur symptoms, sudafed is a decongestant so if u have a runny nose it'll make it worse, not better! if u do have a runny nose, watery eyes try an antihistamine like claritin (less drowsiness than benadryl). these are really just symptomatic treatment. if ur cold just started (i.e w/in 24-48 hrs) and is accompanied by fevers/chills and fatigue u may have the flu - Tamiflu is a prescripiton drug that is an anti-viral and is actually good in shortening the time of a viral infection (i.e cold/flu) but u have to take it w/in the first 24-48 hrs after onset of symptoms.

A cold is caused by an upper respiratory virus. There is no cure for a cold. You just have to wait it out. You have no choice. You can take various medication to help with individual symptoms like runny nose, etc. Otherwise, get some rest and wait.

When I was a kid my mom would take us all to the doctors. When I got there I was all better. I think it was the fresh air.

Another crazy idea. Try squirting lemon juice up your nose. Not fake lemon juice. Its got to be fresh squeezed and nothing else added. No water, no honey, no nothing. Actually I use this to stop a cold from starting. The second I feel a cold coming on, I rush for the lemon!

Not trying to be smart....but...to get "rid" of a cold, you have to wait 7-10 days for it to get out of your system. when you take meds (over the counter or prescription) you are only "masking" the runny nose, sneezing, cough etc...
you want to drink plenty of fluids (water is best) and keep yourself hydrated. chicken soup is wonderful!
feed a cold, starve a fever

Drink lots of fluids, including things that are water, hot (tea) , or spicy (soup)...make sure you blow your nose a lot rather than sniffling. Stay away from dairy (milk, eggs, cheese...), it'll just produce more phlegm. Eat a couple of oranges every day. Try downing a spoon full of apple cider vinegar. Rest, but don't rest too much. Sweat to get all the toxins out.

And if all of that fails, try Sudafed. It targets your symptoms and gets rid of them.

I know it sounds crazy - but vicks your feet before you go to bed and cover them with socks - you will notice the difference in the morning. it will probably take a few times before the cold goes completely away.

Use COLD REMEDY SWABS (ZICAM)
... follow instructions. It really helps! I use it when a runny nose and other cold symptoms first start and my cold lasts only overnight... absolutely amazing!
