I just broke up with my ex-boyfriend today and now he is really mad at me. This usually wouldn't be so much of a problem, but before we started going out we were really good friends. I just don't want this to ruin our friendship.

Well, it looks like this ex-boyfriend really had strong feelings for you, and is just hurt by the fact that there is no more relationship between you two.
I would probably have talked to him, BEFORE breaking up with him to get his point of view, and find out where both of you stand, so you can get his perspective in the whole relationship.
But, being that you've already broken up with him, there was probably a good reason.
He'll get over his anger, and that's usually common, for one of you to get upset by a break-up, especially if the other doesn't understand why there was a need to break up.
But, maybe give it a day or two, wait for him to come to his senses. Write him a letter, and bring it to him, and maybe put some time aside to spend a bit of time with him to discuss why you've made your decision, and go from there.

I think that if you wanted to break up then you shouldn't try to get back with him just to keep him in your life, but I do think you should give him some time to get over his hurt feelings, and maybe his feelings for you, which could take at least a month maybe more, and then work on having a friendship again. But be honest and tell him that you guys should stop spending so much time together til you both can handle being friends again.

U cant expect him to be fine with u breaking up with him, he obviously likes u a lot and u just broke his heart, u need to give him time to heal and get over u but u need to realise that ur friendship may be gone forever or it wont be the same as before, thats the risk u take when u hook up with a mate

you didnt ruin the friendship, you just altered it. Things will never go back to how they were because of your relationship, but things can go back fairly similar to how they were. just give it some time for everything to heal, and later on you two will be laughing about this whole thing GOOD LUCK!

Its typical.. of course he's going to be mad. Thats just how it goes. Hopefully, he just gets over it, and you can become friends again. Probably not like you were before, but at least be able to talk again.

I fear you're fighting a losing battle, as it's almost impossible to go back to just being friends once you've been more.
