There are many various types of damage a road can sustain. Roads are designed for a specific life span, which is primarily due to loading. Heavy trucks cause the most significant damage to a road primarily to their concentrated weight. Freeze/Thaw cycles are also very significant as they allow water to get into the road infrastructure and then expand and break up the road as a vehicle drives over it. It's all the repetitive loading/unloading, freeze/thaw, contract/expand that occurs and eventually destroys the road.

Constant use by heavy traffic destroys asphalt roads. Places where there is a lot of frost causes pot holes. The frost heaves the asphalt and then the asphalt cracks and breaks.. The hole just gets larger until it is repaired properly

Stagnation of water which ingresses into the pavement and it causes loss of strength. Further heavy traffic results cracking which is progressive and subsequently different types of failures occur.

crazy drivers have recks and tear it up, or something like a nail gets into it and some1 runs over it and then it scratches the road.
