Most of the solutions I know are urban legends but oddly enough they work here they are:

1. Cut the onion near a burning candle
2. Cut the onion in half and rinse the onion under cold water
3. I also heard putting a piece of bread in your mouth while cutting the onion helps
4. place a fan infront of you while cutting the onion will work too
5.Now for the outlandish one: I heard an old mexican idea is to cut the onion in half and place it on your head and cut the onion and that will keep you from crying

I know these sound silly but hey 1 and 2 work for me

I know this may sound weird but, I watched an episode of "Rachel Ray" the cooking show & one of the suggestions has worked for me, eat a piece of celery while you are chopping the onion & yes, run the onion under cold water first! & keep the cold water running...the less fumes the better!Basically, if you keep your mouth open your'e not breathing totally thru your nose~when you do that it goes right to your tear ducts~ I know what a mental image! lol..Good luck!

I'm told that if you cut them under water, like in a bowl, the problem goes away. I don't know, I've never found an onion strong enough to make my eyes tear.

Use a good sharp knife, you can put water near the corners of your eye, and/or you need fresh onions.

That hasn't happened to me in years and we eat onions all the time (almost daily) so I am assuming these techniques work.

While cutting onions, breathe through your mouth & not your nose. It works for me. Martha Stewart's got nothing on me!

Martha Steward said that you place a lit candle right next to the area you are cutting them and it would help burn the acid out of the air. {never checked this}
